GOOD EARTH

DRS International school celebrated Earth Day first thing in the morning of 22nd April with an inspiring school assembly presentation by students of grade X-D. DRSIS joined the worldwide community of more than 193 countries to demonstrate support for environmental protection through variety of activities such as: speech, pledge, poster presentation, tree plantation and cooperative painting.

Earth Day 2017’s Campaign is Environmental & Climate Literacy as educationis the foundation of progress. We need to build a global citizenry fluent in the concepts of climate change and aware of its unprecedented threat to our planet. We need to empower everyone with the knowledge to inspire action in defense of environmental protection. In this regard the students organized activities such as planting trees and awareness about the environmental and climate literacy. The students asked the Principal Dr. Gaurav Muradia, Vice Principal Mr. Rudolf Noronha, Mrs. Janet, Ms. Abha and student representatives of each class to inaugurate the Earth day by making an Earth day poster painting with the help of balloon stamp painting in an expressionist art style. Students of X-D had marked their own miniature “better Earth” with balloons and paint. The students had fun signing their names on this unusual painting. The students gave an informative talk on the history of the Earth day and its significance to remember the birth of the modern environmental movement since 1970. The pledge to take care of the Earth and respect its living organisms highlighted the program. The message conveyed was “Let’s make every day the Earth day. Our planet is rare to find. Let’s treasure it and do not destroy it”.

DRSIS PLEDGE AND PROMISE TO THE EARTH ON THIS DAY,

I WILL DO MY PART TO PROTECT THE EARTH

I WILL TAKE CARE OF AND CLEAN UP THE ENVIRONMENT

I WILL ALWAYS RESPECT ALL LIVING BEINGS

NEVER LITTER, AND ALWAYS RECYCLE TO THE BEST OF MY ABILITY

BY DOING THIS, I WILL MAKE A VISIBLE DIFFERENCE IN MY COMMUNITY AND MY WORLD.

Word Wizards!

The inter-house elocution and the show & tell competitions held today encouraged our students to tap into their eloquent sides to great effect. The students of Grades III to V spoke at length about the namesakes of their houses- Galileo Galilei, Issac Newton, Leonardo da Vinci and Nikola Tesla. It was apparent to everyone present that our students’ confidence underlined the research and homework they had done, looking into the lives and work of these intellectual giants.

The students of Grades I and II, meanwhile bowled over the audience with their unbelievably cute and adorable ‘Show & Tell’ presentations. Each student brought with them an artefact they found interesting and worthy of presentation, and shared what drew them to it with those present. The students showed both promise and talent, and were certainly a treat to watch!

A Hundred Languages!

“The child

is made of one hundred.
The child has
a hundred languages
a hundred hands
a hundred thoughts
a hundred ways of thinking
of playing, of speaking.”

-Loris Malaguzzi

The love of life-long learning is an essential quality of every member of the DRSIS community. The first in a series of professional development sessions this year for our team of IK teachers, the session focused on fine-tuning approaches to the early years. The session helped facilitators reflect on enabling and encouraging teaching habits, and through a virtual walk-through helped them identify the areas of the school day they could better refine and enhance through changing their approach. One part of the session helped the facilitators put themselves in their students shoes through the ‘Step-Inside’ thinking routine. The facilitators were also introduced to the PYP- endorsed Reggio Emilia approach through the poem ‘A Hundred Languages’. The session concluded with the teachers identifying areas they wanted to learn more about.

On Earth Day, we celebrate all the gifts the world and nature make available to us. We recognize our complete dependence on its bounty. And we acknowledge the need for good stewardship to preserve its fruits for future generations. - John Hoeven

Some of the activities the children did during the week, hand made masks to enact English stories and mathematics was interesting when Roman numbers were done with match sticks.
