Short Story Writing

Writing Characters That Speak!

The first of a mini series on short story writing, this workshop introduced students to new ways of thinking about writing in characters into short stories. The process of developing vivid, engaging and memorable characters was broken down into a series of fun challenges that encouraged the students to ideate collaboratively.

The characters generated by the students in response to the writing prompts shared by their peers, revealed their intuitive grasp of the essence of their characters. These were refined with a humorous exercise in exploring the elements of character development. The students have since then been engaged in bringing these characters to life in their very own short stories.
