The Paradox of Absolute Freedom

‘What does it mean to be absolutely free?’, ‘What would happen if everyone in the world had absolute freedom?’, ‘What defines freedom?’ were just a few of the many challenging questions that the students of grade IX wrestled with in a heated discussion this Sunday.

The students toyed with unusual ideas in thought-experiments that were designed to stimulate them into challenging their own and each others’ most fundamental assumptions about themselves and their perceptions of the world. The mental ping-pong that followed saw students break out into spontaneous debate, taking sides and defending them with out-of-the-box examples and arguments leaving the students to ponder over what freedom meant to them.
